HamletMachine!! I totally love you!! This totally made my day!! I have been going crazy with the need to see Cain and Able together and I just can't wipe off the very happy and excited grin off my face!! My cheeks are starting to hurt with how happy this page made my day!! I just can't tell you enough how much I love it!! I can't wait to see Cain walk over there and sit down with Able! Happy Dance!!! THANK YOU!!
I love the little descriptions too, like the 'shake shake' and the 'points', it really brings the story to life. I can imagine the scenes. And I must say, I know it's not really any different, but Cain's hair in panel 5 is drop dead sexy
"Inhale" is just a perfect detail. Part of why I love Starfighter so much is because you write so true to people and their interactions and reactions, so that every nuance is meaningful, even if it's almost invisible.
I just read it all from ch.1 to ch.3 I love it! I really enjoy the characters and all the things going on. and the construction of the universe and such itself. I'm defiantly going to be keeping an eye on this now. You do a wonderful job with story telling and your art.
My ex didn't let me talk to other people or have friends either. He threatened to put me in an animal cage and beat it with a fencepost to keep me "his forever". He never sliced my lips open like Cain did to Able. No, he was nicer than that. He only slapped me and called me a "dumpster slut".
I just need to ask: do you realize that you are romanticizing the most horrible kind of person? Do you know what it's like to be the target of a violent tyrant? Do your fans realize that this "OMG KAWAII SEXY" is actually classically defined spousal abuse?
This comic is sick. As a victim of abuse seeing every step of psychological and physical torture being presented as not only erotic but loving makes me ill.
Please, please do your research before being this irresponsible.
And for the fans who for some impossible reason find abuse sexy, I would suggest you visit your local shelter for domestic violence victims. Listen to a few random residents and see how sexy this is.
I have to ask why are you here? This is way into the story and to read a fiction this long that you find offensive....why are you here? Its a story .....its fiction....its a strong story with characters we love to talk about. Cain only bit Able....he didn't beat him or put him in the hospital. I don't find anything abusive in this story at all. I read this cause I love the story line and the charcters and can't wait to see how their relationship grows and changes....its a story. Don't like it then don't read it. Its here for people that can appreciate a true artist and story teller which our HamletMachine is very good at.
Hi, this has been bothering me since I replied to your starfighter comment, but I feel very guilty for going off on you like that.
When I first read your comment, I wrongfully interpreted the bit about your ex as a hypothetical situation to satirize SF, and not something that actually happened to you. It wasn't until I read your response to hamletmachine that I realized I had completely misunderstood where you were coming from.
I wanted to apologize for leaving such an aggressive response. I certainly don't condone abuse or sympathize with abusers whatsoever, so I think the original comment offended me. However, I think I now see where you're coming from better and understand why you would react so strongly to such a controlling/fetishized relationship. I'm very sorry this happened to you, and I will try to be more phlegmatic when responding in the future.
To everyone else reading this, I hope understanding his personal perspective better will quel any initial anger or protectiveness you might have. Personally, I do not believe Cain would hit Abel in a million years. While Cain did bite him twice when they first met and had sex, the second Abel said "No more biting" Cain complied. We haven't even seen so much as a nibble or a hickie since then. However, If I did read the first bites as indicative of abuse, I would probably feel very differently about Cain, so I'll try to be more understanding of people with interpretations I don't agree with.
I strongly disagree with SF being called sick, but the sarcastic tone I responded in was totally unnecessary and I let my initial gut reaction get the better of me! I would feel much better if people would please refrain from complimenting me for the comment and not hold the OP's post against him! Thank you.
Ahh! Oh my god, no, if only that were true.;;;; I admit to being a horrible rage-machine when it comes to people trying to harm hamlet with either cruel words or actions. Nothing makes my rocky, black heart frost over faster. But in order to be constructive, I really need to work on minimizing my bitter sarcasm.
I think the best responses have been made before mine, but I should really add that it's not your job to shame people or to call them sick for reading the material they choose. You can find a better way to have this discussion.
I was going to waste my breath replying to this, but I think Onorobo has said it all and more.
If you honestly believe, we're just sitting here looking up at their relationship as some kind of role model we want for ourselves. Think again. It's called entertainment. It's called fiction. The end.
Sorry for what happened to you, but don't you think your beautiful energy to fight against evil would be more useful if you fought for REAL people who are REALLY abused instead of fictional characters and a comic work which doesn't hurt anyone in real life? As Ono said very well in one of the answers, you don't know the author's motives, the story is not over, you don't know what will happen. You are judging an author without having a clue of who she is. Seriously, do you really think all the artists are guilty and sick because they want to do something else than Disneyworld-like things??
I'm going to make things simple for you, since apparently some people don't know how to read fiction.
• Fiction is made to 1) Make a commentary, 2) inform, 3) entertain. One or several of the above. • In fiction, bad circumstances are used to facilitate the plot. They are what makes the story happen • This means that IN FICTION bad circumstances are often used to entertain. • If something bad happens in fiction, it does not necessarily correlate with the author's preferences or opinions, even if the characters themselves accept or agree with it Examples: +racism in confederacy of dunces +pedophilia in lolita +violence in reservoir dogs +heavy drug use in the man with the golden arm
What we don't know • The circumstances under which Cain comes to Abel • The meaning of Cain's secret mission (which has clearly been a huge plot point so far!!!) • Whether or not Cain minds Abel having /friends/ in general, or just minds Abel talking to Praxis, who seems to know something • How Cain sees their "relationship", if he even sees it as a relationship • In fact, we don't even know if Abel sees it as a relationship • Whether or not Abel is comfortable with having a controlling boyfriend/spouse/lover (many people are. Count my grandma for one, my sister in law, my sister, my dad, etc it's a fact of life, you don't have to like it, but it happens and some people are fine with not wearing the pants.)
What we do know • Cain has a secret mission that no one wants to tell Abel about (so it probably involves Abel, hmmmm?) • Abel was so eager to get rid of his virginity, he made a rushed decision with the first guy who made himself available • We know from the dream sequence he joined the military with the express purpose of both fighting for earth and to meet with available guys • In the elevator, Abel later expresses apprehension about having opened himself up to Cain (this may indicate that he does not see Cain as a boyfriend, but as a means to an end to just get laid) • Abel eagerly undressed himself in the first sex scene • Not wanting to be bitten ≠ not wanting to have sex
Do I think Cain and Abel love each other? I don't even believe they're dating, much less having serious feelings for one another Does Abel put up with being Cain's bitch? Nope! He throws a punch at Cain, asks Praxis about his secrets, orders Cain to be on the bottom in the ship, orders Cain to stop leaving hickies and bites (so far this is met with compliance on Cain's part) Sticks up for himself countless times. Do I like Cain? I do. He's an asshole, but I like asshole characters because they keep the plot fucking rolling. Do I like his behavior? As a character, he's great! As a person, no thanks. Maleficent is my favorite disney character of all time, and LotR's witch king is probably my favorite in the entire series, but I don't want any of them for best friends??? Am I condoning their behaviors? Hell no.
Just because Cain puts Abel in uncomfortable positions does not mean that Hamlet or the fans support and idealize abusive relationships. We read the comic to be entertained by unsavory events. You'd be hard-pressed to find a story that doesn't have at least one of the main characters causing problems for other people. Would I like Shakespeare's Hamlet half so much without any murder, bloodshed, and betrayal? Probably not! Does that mean I condone or support murder, bloodshed, and betrayal? UM.. NO.
I'm fucking rooting for Abel, I want him to live a happy life in a solid, mutual relationship. I'm sure as fuck rooting for Cain, too. I want him to stop being such a sketchy fuck and shape up! Get wiser! Be more gentle! Just because he isn't like that now, doesn't mean I can't cheer him on and hope for both his redemption and his commupance.
This comic is by no means meant to illustrate a perfect relationship, but rather to set up dark circumstances in which you want to see the characters overcome their obstacles, absolve their bad behaviors, and succeed.
TL;DR Bad things happen in stories. Does this mean the author or audience supports those bad things? No. They are a device used to generate a set of circumstances with issues that need to be resolved. A.K.A. a plot.
Go home, man. You're like... embarrassing yourself.
Thank you! I'm tired of sanctimonious posts like the one you responded to. If you don't like it don't read it. The number of books/comics I don't read because I find some plot point offensive could probably fill a warehouse but I don't go to forums or comments to bitch about them to people who do enjoy them.
